چکیده

Extragalactic HII regions and their ionizing star clusters are the most prominent signposts of recent starbirth activity in galaxies. In this paper, we present optical measurements of nearby extragalactic HII regions with the aim of investigating possible relationships between the newborn ionizing clusters and their dynamical environment. Evidence for variations in the measured HII region properties (size, Ha luminosity, and Ha equivalent width) are presented as a function of galaxy type and of position within individual galaxies. These variations, in turn, are compared with the corresponding kinematic and dynamical variations. The apparent sensitivity of the ionizing activity to the dynamical environment suggests that the total masses and upper stellar mass limits of the ionizing clusters are somehow constrained by the ambient tidal stresses and shear flows within the galaxies. We speculate that regions of high tidal stress and kinematic shearing tend to suppress the formation and maintenance of giant molecular clouds, thereby hindering the creation of giant clusters and massive stars therein.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Star Formation in the LMC: Gravitational Instability and Dynamical Triggering

Evidence for triggered star formation is difficult to establish because energy feedback from massive stars tend to erase the interstellar conditions that led to the star formation. Young stellar objects (YSOs) mark sites of current star formation whose ambient conditions have not been significantly altered. Spitzer observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) effectively reveal massive YSOs...

Formation of Globular Clusters: In and Out of Dwarf Galaxies

Despite the rapid observational progress in the study of young massive star clusters, the formation of globular clusters still remains poorly understood. Yet, it is emerging that globular cluster formation is intimately linked to the formation of the Galaxy. I discuss a generic scenario of the cluster formation within progenitor galaxies, based on the available observational constraints. The ol...

Turmoil in Orion: The Nearest Massive Protostar

I discuss different theories of massive star formation: formation from massive cores, competitive Bondi-Hoyle accretion, and protostellar collisions. I summarize basic features of the Turbulent Core Model (TCM). I then introduce the Orion Kleinmann-Low (KL) region, embedded in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and one of the nearest regions of massive star formation. The KL region contains three p...

0 Constraints on the Birth Aggregate of the Solar System

Using the observed properties of our solar system, in particular the isotopic compositions of meteorites and the regularity of the planetary orbits, we constrain the star formation environment of the Sun within the scenario of (external) radioactive enrichment by a massive star. This calculation yields a probability distribution for the number of stars in the solar birth aggregate. The Sun is m...
